รายละเอียด / Details:

The multiple advances in medical science, increasing access to medical care and the new medications available to millions of people, has resulted in a significant increase in longevity of the geriatric population world wide. This trend is likely to continue in the 21st Century. In the United States (US) where the baby boom generation is about to reach the third age, a new subspecialty has emerged, charged with the promotion of longevity and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the physical and psychological disorders of the elderly. Reputable residency training programs in the US developed fellowships to train new geriatric psychiatrists. In 1989, the American Board of psychiatry and Neurology created the additional certification for Geriatric Psychiatry. The first certification examination was offered in 1991. One of the illnesses challenging the new specialty is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), one of the most complex and devastating neuron-psychiatric disorders. It knows no border, religious, racial, ethnic or gender barrier. It’s consequences affect the patient and the care-giving family alike. Some aspects of the subspecialty and the most important historical and nosologic aspects of AD will be discussed including co-morbid psychiatric conditions that occur often as secondary condition at different stages of the disease, such as depression and delusions.
