The paper seeks to outline the development of a module to train primary mental health workers comprising doctors, nurses, school counselors community leaders to become trainers in primary mental health intervention skills in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster in Penang. The module focused on providing input on recognition of the signs & symptoms of stress and the teaching of basic intervention skills of normalization, validation and reframing. A basic introduction to the theory and practice of play therapy and therapy was also provided. A case report of the play therapy conducted with a child survivor is provided to illustrate the result of initial intervention and on-going support through play therapy.
