This independent study aimed to explore the efficacy of Structural Family Therapy in adolescents with depressive disorders who were admitted in Nakornratchasimarajanakarindra Psychiatric Hospital during November 2014 to April 2015 Four patients and their families participated in this treatment program. The treatment program was designed by applying the structural Family Therapy. (Minnuchin, 1974).
The Structural Family Therapy consisted of four sessions including 1) family assessment 2) problem identification 3) working with the interaction and 4) maintenance of change. Three sessions were conducted while patients were admitted in the hospital and the last session was conducted 2 weeks after discharged. Each session ranged 60-90 minutes in average. The instruments used in the study consisted of 1) Childhood Depressive Inventory (CDI) to evaluate depression in adolescents under 15 years old and 2) Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) to evaluate depressive level in adolescents aged above 15 years old, and 3) Chulalongkorn Family Inventory to assess family functioning (CFI).
Results: There were two groups of the patients. The first group was children age (age 11 and 14 years old) evaluated depression by the CDI. The second group was adolescent age (age 15 and 17 years old) evaluated depression by the CES-D. Before therapy, all patients had depression, 3 of them also had suicide idea, and all four families had mean scores of CFI score in poor family function more than 3 parts.
The results from this study show that all four patients had depression score of all four patients were normal, and family mean scores were good. This study indicates that not only pharmacotherapy, but the structural family therapy could change the struture and relationships of the family members, consequently decreasing depressive symptoms in adolescents.
