Objective: A series of surveys of high school students in Southern Thailand is conducted annually to monitor health risk behaviours. This report presents a comparison of the rates of depression and suicide attempts between the 2002 and 2003 cohorts. Methods: The subjects were randomly selected students in years 7,9 and 11 and public schools in four provinces in Southern Thailand. A self-completed and anonymous questionnaire is administered tot he students in their classrooms. The sample sizes were 8708 (4,316 boys and 4,356 girls) and 12,148 students (5,675 boys and 6,440 girls) in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Results: In 2002, 16% of boys and 20% of girls reported ever feeling so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row during the previous 12 months that they had stopped doing some usual activities. The corresponding rates were 14% and 15% in 2003. The rates of suicidal ideas (5-6% in boys and 7-9% in girls), suicidal plans (5% in boys and 8-9% in girls) and attempts (4% in boys and 6-7% in girls) were similar between the two cohorts. In both years, girls and older students were more likely to feel depressed or have suicidal plans or attempts than were boys and younger students. Boys had a higher rate of attempting suicide that resulted in an injury such as taking poison, or a overdose that had to be treated in a hospital. Conclusion: This is important knowledge in addressing adolescent health-risk behaviours. Special attempts should be made to reach those who are at risk of self-harm and provide appropriate intervention.
