The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the level of quality of life in mentally reatarded family and the relationship between related factors and quality of life of the mental retardeds parents in out patient department of rajanukul institute. The data were collected during 1 February - 31 March 2004 from the 229 mentally retarded's parents. The questionnaires, consisted of 4 parts: general information of mental retarded persons, families, general information of mental retarded persons, the screening test for suicidal risk and the Thaiversion of the quality of life indicator which was translated and modified from the world health organization quality of life - bref (WHOQOL-BREF). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean and Chi-square test. The results of the study revealed that most of mentally retarded family had moderate quality of life 52.8%, while the good quality of life was 30.1%. The quality of life in mentally retardeds, parents in 4 domains, most of them had moderate level of quality of life in physical health, mental health, social relation and environment domain as 61.1%, 57.6%, 69.4% and 78.6% respectively. Auality of life in general was found to be at moderate level for 79.9%. There were significantly different levels of quality of life, when the following factors were considered: education, adequate income, impact from having mentally retarded person in family, self injury/suicidal idea, homicidal idea, depression, suicidal risk, and having health problem/illness. This finding will benefit for mental health promotion and prevention to increase quality of life of mental retarded persons and their familes.
