Objective: To asess depression levels and to investigate of the Royal Thai Army troops during their assignments in East Tomor. Method: The sample of the study consisted of 300 soldiers who were positioned in East Timor for six months and who were selected by means of random sampling. The subjects responded to the questionaires about depression and attitudes. Data collection was conducted twice-during the first and last months of their operation. Results: The findings revealed that during the first month, of the total fo 287 subjects who returned the questionnaire (100%), 188 were normal, while second largest group of 40, or 13.94%, were mildly atressed, and 14 subjects, or 4.88% ranged from moderately to severely depressed. During the last month of the operation, 245 of the subjects returned the questionnaire, and the findings were rather similar to those obtained during the first phase of the study. Conclusion: Based on the finding, it could be concluded that most of the subjects' emotion was consisdered normal during both phases of data collection-at the begining and the end of the operation. Only a small number of subjects were moderately or severely depressed. As regards attitudes toward the depression in their operation, it was found that that the sources of depression were family, environment, the duration of tasks, the nature of the assigned tasks, and personal problems.
