Objective: Very few studies have been published on calls to suicide prevention hotlines. This study aimed to determine the demographic variables of callers who showed an increased risk of suicidal behavior to a suicide hotline in Malaysia in the years 2001 through 2003. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted where the data was collected retrospectively from the suicide hotline for the years 2001 through 2003. Only calls showing an increased risk of suicidal behaviour were included in the data analysis. The data was analysis using the SPSS computer program. Result: There were 2790 calls in this study. The majority of the callers were repeat callers, female, aged 21 to 30 years old, unmarried, Chinese and unemployed. Findings showed that most of the callers were having complex/multidimensional problems, relationship difficulties and psychological problems. Conclusions: The higher proportion of Chinese callers was of interest due to the relatively lower number of Chinese admitted for suicide attempts in Malaysian hospitals as was seen in previous studies. It is thought partly to be due to the higher proportion of Chinese in the urban areas and possibly due to the media exposure of the suicide hotline in the Chinese and English Newspapers. Other demographic characteristics were similar to that of deliberate self-harm victims; being young, single and female, with their calls being precipitated by crises at home or at work.
