10 girls and 4 boys who attempted suicide were reported. These children were referred to psychiatric division, Pediatric department, Siriraj Hospital because of over using of pills. The ages were between 7 and 12 years 6 months in which the predominant age were between 10 and 11 years. All children came from large families. Drugs including sleeping pills (3), antipyretic (1), transquilizer (3) and anticonvulsant (2) were mostly used, and 4 of them took insecticides. Only one boy hanged himself. These suggested that children could take drugs easily either bought by themselves from drug stores or these drugs were left around in the house. There were usually belonged to one member of the family who used it. Of death, They thought of death as reversible. They attempted suicide impulsively to avoid stress or threatening situation There were prominent depression and hostility in their moods. Depression was noted long before the real attempted occurred. The children presented their anger, unhappiness. There were episode of frequent quarrelling with siblings, parents or friends. It was observed that, half of the cases had the history of self-destructive behaviors such as starving, isolating himself alone in the locked room or ran away from home etc., when ever they were angry with someone or his need was not satisfied. Some children showed aggressive wish to kill other people They expressed hate feelings toward specific person. The home backgrounds of these children showed unhappiness and some turmoils 3 of them were separated from parents and another 3 of them had depressed mother 2 of them had parent died during early childhood. There were some quarelling between parents. 2 of the fathers were reported having explosive episode and bad tempers. The patient was usually his victim. Among these children, few attempted suicide following the parents or siblings telling them to do so 1/3 of cases had stresses from school. One boy who was mild mental retarded was frequently beaten by teacher. He took pills in order to escape from school. 2 girls quarelled with friends and had much anger toward them. This report showed some background of the children who attempted suicide. The children mostly had depressive mood before the time of admission. Some of them were emotional and easily burst out. One group had good behavior but was in depressive situation. The others showed bed temper and irritable mood which easily became explosive. Suicide in children can be preventable if the adults recognize the child’s feelings and thoughts. They could be helped in many ways to improve the environment, and to help the children use another channels to deal with stress.
