The prevalence of male adolescents seeking psychiatric treatment or counseling on sexual problems in Srilanka, has increased to a considerable extent over the past few years. It has been found that approximately 10 % of all referrals to psychiatric clinics of males between the ages 15-19 pertain directly to symptoms that occur in association with manifestation of adolescent sexuality. Commonly these adolescents present with symptoms such as guilt, anxiety, hypochondriasis, depression or ideas of reference, based on common sexual problems of this age group, such as: 1. Masturbation 2. Loss of semen mostly as nocturnal emissions. 3. Homosexuality 4. Other sexual difficulties. The aim of the present study was to: 1. assess the prevalence, clinical features and intensity of such sexual problems that occur in a sample of male adolescent school children 2. investigate the possible etiological factors of such problems such as culture bound belief systems and parental attitudes that pertain to sexuality, and their significance. 3. identify channels of communication through which they obtain advice , counseling or even treatment, and inquire into the means by which such communications could be improved.
