The investigators surveyed the drinking of two hundred males and two hundred females whom were randomly sampled from the population of Bangkoknoi district Bangkok, Thailand. All of them were married. Most of them were between the twenties and forties. The majority of them had primary education and their family incomes were not more than three thousand baths per month (January 1973) There were thirty-six percents of the total. Approximately half of male and female population were mild drinkers. Men claimed to be social drinkers and women drank “Ya-dong-loa” after the childbirth. There were twelve and one half percents of problem drinkers and most of them were men. Women who drank were likely to have neurotic symptoms during childhood and they were the middle children.
