Forty cases of attempted suicide of the Thai people using various methods are reported. All patients were hospitalized for seriousness of their attempts. They were psychologically examined and tested soon after their physical recoveries. The study was on epidemiology, motivation, precipitating factors, familial and personality backgrounds as well as the psychiatric problems. Results showed that the high risk factors were female sex, young age, high level of education and high socio-economic status. The incidence was also high in person who were either single or having unstable marriage. Ingestion of drugs and toxic substances was the most popular method. There was no significant difference in the numbers of men and women who used violent methods. More than half of them gave no warning signs. Practically every case had abnormal familial backgrounds such as broken homes, parents’ psychological problems and false parental attitudes towards their children. A significant number of the patients were schizoid and over 80 percent of them had psychological symptoms prior to their attempted suicide. The major precipitating factors were domestic and marital problems, delusion and hallucination. The most frequent motivation for the attempted suicide was to escape from the insoluble problems. In addition the most important factors associated with this tragic behavior were their personalities and mental disorders.
