The author carried out a comparative study of psychiatric hospital beds between Psychiatric hospitals in Europe and those in Thailand which revealed similar picture. It is hypothesized that the similarity is possibly attributed to the import of western technology. To date, there has been improvement in psychiatric hospital bed capacity. Simultaneous increasing number of mental health service units in general hospitals is also observed, which creates anticipation of their important role as main mental health service unit of the country. Among recommendations made, the necessity of personnel development and the quality of psychiatric services in psychiatric hospitals are emphasized.
