Psychiatric services in Thailand started as individual therapeutic care which continued for several decades. Community oriented concept of mental health was first implemented in the Project of Interrelation of Mental health to primary Health Care with satisfactory result. By the end of September 1984, the area coverage of project operation included 13 provinces. The New Model of mental health activities in primary Health Care is training provincial trainees to become trainers in mental health for every level of health workers, including the VHCs and the VHVs in all provinces in 1991.
