The genetic study on a sample of patients with affective disorders is carried out. The genetic analysis includes 173 affective disorder probands, representing 173 families. One hundred and twebty eight probands had experienced exclusively depession (unipolar affective disorder), and the remainders both mania and depression (bipolar affective disorder). The frequency of affective disorders were investigated among parents, siblings and children, and were throughout found to be some what increased in comparison with general population. The risks of developing the disease in the closed relatives were found to vary between 3.6 to 6.3 percent, depending on whether only certain or both "certain" and "uncertain" cases were included, whereas in general population it has been estimated to be about 1 percent. In the present investigation risks in the different groups of relatives were as follows; parents 2.3 percent, siblings 4.7 percent and children 6.8 percent which were closed to those studied by stensted.
