The objectives of this action research were tos tudy problems with empathy in psychiatric patients care, and to develop personnel's empathic understanding towards patients in the psychiatric ward at Prasrimahabhodi Psychiatric Hospital Ubonrajchatani Province. The population for this study consisted of the 237 personnels who cared for the patients and 104 patients in 13 wards. A needs assessment was conducted using the Appriciation Influence control AIC process with personnels, and focus group discussions with patients. The instruments used in is research were an observation check list an interview auidem a tape reconder and two sets of evaluation forms developed by using Guttman scales which weere validated by 3 experts and had coeffcients of .93. The data was analyzed by using frequency distribution, percentage, mean and the Wilcoxon test. Data collected from observations interviews, focus group discussions and the AIC process was content analzed. The results of this study indicated that the personnel were not aware of how to care for patients empathetically and lacked the skill to apply it eith patients. 3 months after a personnel's empathic Understanding promoting program was developed the personnels's behaviour was changed. The patients perceived that the personnel was better at empathetically caring for them. In a 2 month follow up study, it was found thaat the personnel's empathic understanding remained.
