This descriptive study aimed to determine the prevalence of regular substance addiction and factors involved. The target population were male prisoners in Nong Khai Provincial Prison. Data have been collected from 255 male prisoners by using questionnaires and separate interviews. Thus, they were found that the most of prisoners who have regular use of addict substance had primary school educational level and lived with father and mother. The causes of regular substance addiction were said to be need to try or to learn, thinking that smart or popular hit, need to imitate someone, persuasion by friend, and love deprivation in the family. Most of the prisoners who have regular use of illegal addict substance, having used legal addict substance (i.e.. cigarette and alcohol) prior to illegal substance addiction (89.6%). The age of first trial ranged between 9-35 years with the median age at 16 years. When type of addict substances had been classified, the range of regular substance addiction while studying in school was between 11.1 % - 62.5%. Persuasion to addict substance trial, mostly come from peer group and was this group that they wanted to imitate most while the relatives were the second. Finally, the most influential groups which made them give up the habit were themselves, parents (father and mother), wife and their children.
