Objective To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of combination of olanzapine and fluvoxamine in comparison to olanzapine alone in acute-phase schizophrenic patients. Method Prospective 6-week clinical study was performed on 20 schizophrenic patients. Patients were randomly assigned to the treatment with olanzapine and fluvoxamine or olanzapine alone. Outcome measurements and efficacy were assessed by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and adverse effects were evaluated by UKU side effect scale every 2 weeks. Results Fluvoxamine combined with olanzapine significantly improved BPRS total scale (p=0.037) and BPRS general psychopathology scale (p=0.045) more than olanzapine alone in treatment of schizophrenic patient. Moreover, combination of olanzapine and fluvoxamine shortened time from the beginning to clinical response (p=0.015). In considering the adverse effects during 6-week period, there was no statistical difference between two groups. Conclusions The results suggest that fluvoxamine combined with olanzapine is more effective than olanzapine alone in the treatment of acute-schizophrenic patient during the first six weeks of treatment without increasing any adverse effects.
