The data is collected by recording the time frame spending on direct and indirect nursing activities of nursing personnel throughout 24 hours. According to the data analysis by statistical methods of means, standard deviation and percentage, it was found that the nursing personnel would perform their duty at the average of 7.5 hours per shift work on both direct and indirect nursing activities excluding a break time. The professional nurses would spend 42.3% and 57.5% of their time on direct and indirect nursing activities respectively. The patients from classification 1, 2, 3 and 4 needed direct nursing for quality of care at 7.11, 5.41, 4.25 and 3.32 hours respectively. Upon calculating the requirement for manpower of nursing personnel it was found that a total of 476 nursing personnel were needed to take care of 448 psychiatric patients. If a ratio of professional nurses to nurse aides was set at 1:1, there was a requirement of 236 nursing personnel for both aforementioned categories. Consequently, 141 professional nurses and 89 nurse aides were additionally needed to reach the total number of 230 persons. To meet this requirement, it was necessary to train all technician nurses in each patient ward to be professional nurses. The findings demonstrated that there was a considerable shortage of nursing personnel in Somdej chaopraya Hospital. Hence, it should consider how to encourage the professional nurses to increasingly spend their time on direct nursing activities especially those activities on psychiatric treatment by group therapy and to prepare patients and their relatives upon return home for recovery.
