รายละเอียด / Details:

The programs for mental health development have never been a priority in Asia for many years. Diverse socio-cultural needs, disparity in resources and limitations in workforce have generally been cited as major reasons for these limitations. There is no doubt that mental health professionals have tried their best to raise the profile of mental health services through the efforts of their respective governments but the real change has been witnessed by the efforts of voluntary professional groups in this region. South Asian Forum on Mental Health, AFPA, ASEAN, SAARAC Federation and the different components of World Psychiatric association has laid the foundations of many innovative and promising perspectives in this regard. This presentation describes the developments of SAF and AFPA, in particular, for their roles in promotion of mental health in this region. SAF was formally launched at an international meeting held in Colombo in April 2002. This launch was however preceded by efforts of many years that were started by the psychiatrists from these countries who always considered ways and means to bring mental health professionals together. The WPA section on Psychiatry was formed at the XIII WPA World Congress of Psychiatry in 2005 September in Cairo. It was formed to address the needs of developing countries (now also called Low and Medium income Countries by some colleagues) developing countries. This paper describes how these ideas became a reality and gives an outline of the historical development of these Asian groups. A detailed account will be given about the aims and objective and activities of some of these organizations that have taken place over the last few years with a special mention about the regional and international collaboration inn academic, educational and other service provision projects initiated or funded by these groups.
