รายละเอียด / Details:

This quasi- experimental research aimed to examine the effect of group processes on health belief, health behavior ,and body mass index (BMX) of people with obesity living in the northern zone of Muang district, Phayao province, during January-september2007 ,It was conducted among 48 obese people selected to take part in the day camp for 2 days. The activities in day camp were composed of personal health belief modification, modification of health behaviors on food and drink consumption, exercise, stress, and health examination. The subjects were followed up at 2, 4 and 6 months after the comp. Data were collected using questionnaire, structural observation, group discussion, and physical examination before and after the camp, Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Wilcox on sign ranked test was used for comparison and presented along with qualitative data. The results are as for rows. The subjects were mostly married women who lived with their spouse. Most of them were farmer with primary education and family income lower than 5,000 baht per month. Thirty four subjects were obese with BMI more than 30 Kg/m2. After the camp, the subject had significantly higher scores in health belief and health behaviors (p‹0.01). Subjects with high level of health behavior could reduce their MBI more other groups. Six months after the camp, twenty six subjects had lower BMI. The number of obese subjects decreased to thirty one people. There were three subjects who had normal BMI (BMI<25Kg/m2). The number of very obese group, however, stayed the same. The average BMI after the cam was significantly lower than that of before the camp (p<0.01). The critical success factors to weight reduction were food consumption according to BMI, and exercise or in creased body motion. It was suggested that group processes during the health behavior development camp had positive effect towards modifications in health belief, health behavior, and BMI decline among subjects. The health behavior development camp was not totally successful as there were subjects who still could not decrease their BMI. Researchers will continue to follow up and extend the study to achieve individual and group effects. It is recommended that this quasi*experimental study and its instrument be continuously developed. Other group of population should be identified to prevent chronic diseases and their complications among high risk population in the long run.
