รายละเอียด / Details:

The objective of this study is to assess the attitude towards psychiatric patients among the Thai population and related factors. Participants consisted of 5,583 individuals aged upper 18 years old who were listed in the house registration both within and outside the manicipalities throughout the country. Stratified multi-stage cluster sampling method was used in participants recruitment. Data were collected through interviews based on a guideline which consisted of two parts. The first part contained questions about personal data, the relationship with psychiatric patient, the source of their perceotion of psychiatric patient, their knowledge of psychiatric illness. The second part was about beliefs, opinions, feelings, and their opinions on their behavior towards psychiatric patient. A scale of 1 to 7 was used in responding to all of the questions in this part. Data analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, correllations, and t-test. Results indicated that 52.9 percent of participants were women, the majority of them were older than 40, and were married. Eighty-one percent did not have a bachelor's degree, 31.3 percent were in private business. Essential information that was still missing was on treatment with medication. Their attitude towards psychiatric patient seemed to be negative if they had to live with or had close relationship with psychiatric patient. Their beliefs, opinions, feelings, and their opinions on their behavior towards psychiatric patient tended to be positive. Only on certain few issues that their responses tended to be negative, in particular on the opinion that psychiatric patient should not have equal rights as a normal citizen, psychiatric illness was an obstacle against working and socialization. Their opinions on their behavior towards psychiatric patient showed that they would neither employ a psychiatric patient on a job nor work alongside such patient. Variables that correlated with attitude were educational level, experience in seeing psychiatric patients, the types of television programs they watch, their personal relationship with psychiatric patients, and their knowledge of psychiatric illness. One exception was that there were no correlations between knowledge and belief.
