Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), one of the short-term psychotherapies, is an evidencebased therapy. The IPT therapist tries to link the patient's depressive symptoms with one of the interpersonal problems; 1) grief 2) interpersonal role disputes 3) role transitions and 4) interpersonal deficits. When the interpersonal problem is resolved, the patient will relieve from depressive symptoms. The duration of treatment is about 16 sessions in 16 weeks. IPT consists of three phases of treatment; 1) initial phase, 2) intermediate phase, and 3) termination phase. The therapeutic techniques of IPT are exploratory techniques, communication analysis, use of therapeutic relationship. The IPT therapist has active role and advocates for patient. The goals of IPT are to resolve interpersonal difficulties, to improve patient's interpersonal or social skills, to reduce the patient's social isolation, to increase the patients' social support, and to relieve the patient's depressive symptoms.
