รายละเอียด / Details:

In Thai society monks play an important role in the field of mental health. Most people tend to consult the monks whom they respect when they have psychological problems. Since the presence of a psychiatric disorder especially depression and alcohol abuse, is a significant risk factor associated with suicide, educational programs to teach Buddhist monks for early detection of the disorder and referral of the patients to mental health professionals for effective treatment is an important strategy in the primary prevention of many of suicide. The doctrine of the Noble Eightfold Path, particularly right thought, right action and right livelihood focuses on abstaining from any action that brings harm to oneself and others beings, such as trading in arms, intoxicating drinks poisons slaughtering etc. This Buddhist approach lends support to WHO steps to suicide prevention which includes gun control, responsible media reporting, and control of toxic substances, Faith in the wheel of Rebirth and the bad action (Kamma) that can lead one to woeful planes of existence after death, such as heel, ghost demons and animal kingdom, have a profound impact on suicide prevention. The method of extension of Metta (loving-kindness) to oneself and others is also an effective means to counteract wishes for revenge, anger aggressive fantasies or punishment which are associated with suicidal impulse.
