รายละเอียด / Details:

Objective: the present astudy was an experimental study which was aimed at investigating efficacy of acupuncture on attention and concentration. Methods: The sample consisted of healthy volunteers at the Acypuncture clinic and the Neurological clinic at Srithanya Hospital. the inclusion criteria included not taking any anxiolytic medicines, sleeping pills, cold medicines, or beta-blockers and having received continuous acupuncture treatment for 2 to 5 times a week for a total course of 10 times. The acupoints were sishencong (Ex-Hn1), with the needles sustained for 30 minutes. The recording instrument was the Bio-Logic audioevoked potential P300 EP300 which recorded the data at baseline within one day after finishing the therapy and at the one week follow-up period. The average time of the P300 record was 18 minutes. The latency time and the amplitude of EP300 at the central point were analyzed. the subjects in the experimental group and the control group were tested on reaction time by the Tachist computer program at baseline, after the 3nd, 6th and 10th times of acupuncture , within 24 hours of the treatment and at one week follow-up. In addition, the subjects were asked to rate themselves on sleep, concentration, and emotion by using a 5-point Likert scale, Finally, the Friedman test was used to calculate the mean and compare the differences in reaction time and latency of EP 300. Results: There were 14 subjects who participated in this study. the mean age was 40.40+-7.83 years. The finding revealed that there was no statistically significant differences among self-assessment regarding sleep, emotion, and concentration. However, all subjects experienced sleepiness at early night and felt that they could sleep more tightly and soundly than usual. The latency time also decreased, but with no statistical significance. In addition, it was also found that the reaction time improved significantly. However, when the results were compared with those obtained from the ten subjects in the control group, no statistically significant differences were found. Conclusion: Acupuncture results in brain physiologic changes as proven by EP300. The findings of the present study will benefit further studies on efficacy of treatment to restore memory and concentration in other neuro-psychiatric cases.
