Asia is a continent in which more than 450 million people are reported to suffer from mental and neurological disorders, but in which policy makers and public opinion do not recognize mental health and mental health care as a priority. In spite of a ratio of mental health professionals to population, which is far away from WPA standards, this continent contributes significantly to the psychiatric manpower in several developed areas of the world, and particularly in the UK and US. In spite of the presence of several prominent psychiatric centers in the continent, and of the existence of many renowned psychiatrists working in Asia or of Asian origin, there is no Asian psychiatric journal with an impact factor at the moment, and the percentage of papers originates from Asia published in international psychiatric journals remains relatively low. There is a need for new journals of high quality, which focus on issues relevant for mental health in developing countries. Such journals would provide platforms not only for research, but also for wide based education on topical issues of clinical and public health relevance. The Asian Journal of Psychiatry has the potential to represent a major tool to address the above gaps, and to bring together Asian psychiatrists, psychiatrists of Asian origin and all psychiatrists and professionals of mental health disciplines who are interested in Asian psychiatry, which takes care of the mental health of over 60% of the world’s population. Given the growing magnitude of the mental health problems in this part of the world, and the increasing importance attached to promoting research in this area, a journal such as Asian Journal of Psychiatry is expected to be highly successful and the success in the 21st century.
